The Sørlandet was built in 1927 in Kristiansand, its home port. This summer, after the ship's voyage with the Class Afloat 2011-2012 crew, it sailed from Malta to Tuzla in Turkey to get to the Desan Shipyard in Tuzla near Istanbul. We started bringing down sails, gear and yards on our way to Turkey and let cranes do the rest once we got there. The ship got completely emptied. It has never been this empty in a very long time. The entire interior will be rebuilt in a more traditional fashion. The existing bunks will let place to hammocks. There will still be bunks remaining, however fewer than before. The hull of the ship will be maintenanced and an additional door from the banjer to the aft ship will be added. The ship will be dry docked in a warehouse in Tuzla from May 10th 2012 until the work is done and then it will be once again chartered by Class Afloat for the 2012-2013 year.
