In my life, I have never seen snow fall and Northern light. So I decided to travel with my wife to travel around lapland to fulfill our dream. One of the dream is to travel to the North Cape.
North Cape is the most northern point in europe reachable by car/ motorcycle. Further north on top of this place can only be reached by plane or by boat.
During winter travel to North Cape is not easy due to the followings:
- Road can be slippery. We almost accident due to slippery road.
- Snow fall is quite heavy. At first, we were so excited as we never see snow fall before. However, after a few occasions, we felt so stress as it is very difficult to see the road during snow fall.
- During winter, we had short day time. The daytime will start from 10am till 2pm. Most of the time, we were driving in the dark.
- Short prayer time for Zohor and Asr. Alhamdulillah Jama' is really helping us.
- Sometimes road will be closed due to snow storm or road was covered by snow. Please check your google maps frequently.
We began our journey from Saariselka Finland - Rovaniemi Finland - Kiruna Sweden - Abisko Sweden - Bodo/Lofoten Norway - Tromso Norway - Alta Norway - North Cape Norway (Total journey more than 2,000km).
In average we drove 7 hours per day. Before we reached at North Cape, we slept at Honningsvag, Norway. On the way to Honningsvag, we met North light 2 times. The first place is in Alta and the next place is Olderfjord.
At Honningsvag, we checkout from hotel at 9.30am to reach the checkpoint at 10.00am. During winter, we need to follow the truck as it needs to clear the snow all the way to north cape. This is my first time driving during snow storm. It was amazing experience to me. We never felt scare to achieve our dream. Finally, we reached North cape around 11 am.
As the weather is getting worse, half and hour later we were asked to leave before it gets worse. Alhamdulillah we managed to escape from North cape and driving back to Saariselka Finland via Kirkenes Norway and Inari Finland.
