An insightful discussion on how EU capacity ceilings in the fisheries sector relate to the urgent need for decarbonisation.

The recent report published by Swedish RISE institute on behalf of ClientEarth Capacity Ceilings in EU Fisheries: Obstacle or Opportunity for the Decarbonisation Process? challenges the perception that vessel weight and power limits under the EU's Common Fisheries Policy (CFP) are hindering the transition to cleaner, more energy-efficient technologies. Instead, the findings show that these capacity ceilings are not a barrier to the energy transition and can align with decarbonisation efforts, making a revision of the CFP’s capacity ceilings provision not necessary.

This timely event, ahead of the European Commission Energy Transition Partnership workshops (11-12 December) focusing on small-scale, large-scale, and distant-water fisheries, broght together experts, policymakers, and both small-scale and large-scale fishers to explore the report’s findings and their implications for decarbonisation in the fisheries sector.

Attendees had the opportunity to engage directly with stakeholders, pose questions, and gain valuable insights on shaping a sustainable future for fisheries.
