We explored the Lofoten Islands by car camping and staying in some cute hotels, and it was incredible. We started in Svolvaer and drove all the way to A, staying in various little towns and scenic roadside camp spots along the way.
Best Time to Go
Summer months from June to August are undoubtedly the best times to go. From mid May to mid July, you will experience the midnight sun!
Getting Around and Camp Sites
In terms of driving, the best thing about this area is that there are no toll roads and camping is free anywhere (unless there are no signs that say no camping). Everything is fairly close by so it is a really great place to road trip.
Itinerary
1 day Svolvaer
2 days Henningsvaer
2 days Leknes
3 days Reine
This is a rough guide in terms of the area to stay. If you are camping, just try to find spots in these general areas!
Svolvaer
Svolvaer is the biggest town in the Lofotens and it is a great spot to load up on groceries and any alcohol or wine. You can only buy beer in other areas of the Lofotens, so if you want wine or liquor but it here!
Henningsvaer
Henningsvaer is a really cute canal town that has one of the most beautiful football fields in the world. It has a lot of local shops, cafes and really nice restaurants. It is a perfect place to base yourself to do the hikes in the area and to visit Nusfjord. Nusfjord is a heritage site and one of the oldest preserved fishing villages in the Lofotens.
2 days Leknes
We camped near Leknes at Lofoten Beach Camp for a night and near Ryten. The sights in this area are quite spread out, so Leknes is a good middle ground with lots of beaches nearby.
3 days Reine
Reine is near the western tip of the Lofotens and is a great base to explore this area. Make sure to check out the neighboring fishing villages Hamnoy, Sakrisoy and A as well! They are all very similar but they all have their charm.
The famous Reinebringen hike is in Reine and a lot of other epic destinations and short viewpoint hikes!
