WORLDwrite, celebrated for its groundbreaking Citizen TV School and myth-busting documentaries, is thrilled to launch its latest epic in full, here on YouTube—just in time for Christmas viewing!
Already acclaimed on the international festival circuit and winner of multiple awards, including Best Documentary and Most Inspirational Documentary, this epic feature weaves together the powerful stories of those who made others' struggles their own, enriched by rare archival footage and thought-provoking analysis.
Structured into ten captivating chapters, the film spans 160 years of solidarity, from the Lancashire millworkers who opposed slavery to young Russians standing with Ukraine today. Through personal testimonies and expert insights, it poses timely and provocative questions: What makes solidarity more than charity? And if class politics are no longer significant and ideas of ‘difference’ are all the rage, what does that mean for solidarity today?
Inspired by their work filming messages of support for Ukraine, WORLDwrite’s dedicated volunteer crews uncovered a rich but little-known history of solidarity in the UK. The result is an investigative triumph, brimming with historical context and relevance for today.
Ceri Dingle, Director of WORLDwrite, explains:
“The film illuminates extraordinary moments in history when people came together for causes far greater than their own immediate concerns. In sharp contrast to today’s divisive identity politics and the limiting ‘stay in your lane’ mindset, it serves as a powerful reminder of the unifying strength of solidarity. We hope it inspires audiences to embrace the importance of winning arguments over pleading victimhood and to question the destructive focus on difference perpetuated by many of today’s so-called ‘critical’ theories on race, gender, and sexuality.
Supported by a small grant from the National Lottery Heritage Fund and the invaluable partnership of The National Archives, this ambitious project stands as a testament to the creative power of collective endeavour.
