The entire history between Ukraine and Russia (All Parts) - 499 BCE - 2022
Ukraine first appears in the history books in the writings of the 5th century BCE Greek historian Herodotus. He referred to the region that comprises the modern nation of Ukraine - the stretch of steppes, mountains, and forests stretching north of the Black Sea - as Pontos Euxeinos or ‘Hospitable Sea’. The region was seen as a frontier between Greek civilization and the Barbarian world to the east.
With the dissolution of the U.S.S.R. in December 1991, Ukraine gained full independence. The country changed its official name to Ukraine, and it helped to found the Commonwealth of Independent States (CIS), an association of countries that were formerly republics of the Soviet Union.
A lot happened in the 90s and 00s but later on, in 2018, Zelensky became president of Ukraine which was very positive for Ukraine. Zelensky promised to end the growing escalation with Russia and enter into a productive dialogue with Vladimir Putin. The Russian president, however, had other ideas.
In the closing months of 2021, Russia began to build up its troop strength along the Russian Ukrainian border as well as along Ukraine’s border with Belarus. On 24 February 2022, Putin launched a full-scale invasion of Ukraine.
