Finally we reached my goal destination!
There were a few points where I didn’t think we’d make it (throughout the entire trip), standing next to that big globe has been my goal since I first found out about its existence; but once you start putting panniers on a bike (that would like to be on a track day please) you start feeling pre-exhausted in anticipation and internally reduce your expectations of yourself to soften the potential blow of giving up halfway.
Then when I hit snow the morning of, I had to wonder if I’d made it so far and had to turn around. Thankfully we persevered and it didn’t get much worse than the clips in this video, which I’m sure most bikers endure on their winter commutes in the UK, but for me was pretty concerning.
I will be forever grateful to Denise and Iain who let me sit in their caravan and fed me coffee while we waited for 3 hours for the centre to open so we could buy our magnets and leave the island in a nice window of blue sky.
I’m now beelining south, I still have 2 weeks before I need to be home, but with the weather forecast looking a bit iffy I’ll feel better back outside the Arctic circle in normal rain that doesn’t have ice in it ????
