Ben Jupp Memorial Lecture - Ely Amnesty Group

Professor Dame Sara Thornton will speak on Modern Slavery: Hidden in Plain Sight

The recent Global Slavery Estimates suggested that there were 50 million people across the world in either forced labour or forced marriage. And the number is increasing despite a United Nations commitment to end slavery by 2023. What lies behind the cruel exploitation of our fellow human beings and what can be done about it – by governments, businesses and individuals.

Dame Sara Thornton served a three-year term as the UK Independent Anti-Slavery Commissioner from 2019-2022. She is currently a consultant in modern slavery at CCLA Investment Management and a Professor of Practice in modern slavery policy at the Rights Lab, University of Nottingham, where she focuses on research in the area of prevention, business responses, supply chains, and the role of the financial sector in tackling modern slavery. For thirty-three years she worked in policing serving as both the chief constable of Thames Valley Police and the chair of the National Police Chiefs’ Council.

The lecture will take place in the north transept of the Cathedral.
