Inscription on the plaque in front of the chapel:
St. John's Chapel - The Worlds Nothernmost Chapel
As far back as the 1600s the North Cape has attracted visitors from near and far. The North Cape's majestic scenery and ever-changing weather give many people a religious experience. The desire to have a religious gathering point at the North Cape came from many sources.
At the North Cape people come together from all over the world and from different religious denominations. St. John's Chapel is therefore an ecumenical - an interdenominational - chapel. Anyone can find a place for contemplation and meditation here regardless of their faith.
The chapel has only three symbols: Christ, the cross and the dove - the only symbols about which all Christian religious denominations are in agreement.
St. John's Chapel is the result of an artistic collaboration between Kirkelig Kulturverksted and Norwegian craftsmen. The music that is played was composed and dedicated to the chapel by Jan Garbarek, one of Norway's best jazz musicians.
St. John's Chapel - named after John the Baptist - was consecrated on Midsummer Day,
24 June 1990. The chapel is consecrated for all ecclesiastical activities and is often utilised for baptisms and weddings.
In Christ there is no east or west,
In him no south or north,
Rut and avert followchin of la
Join hands then, brothers of the faith…“
