The Nordkapp class is a Norwegian Coast Guard ship class built in the 1980s, and is used for rescue, fishery inspection, research purposes and general EEZ patrol in Norwegian waters. It is a class of ships purpose built for the Norwegian Coast Guard with a secondary role as wartime naval escorts. The Norwegian Coast Guard is a part of the Royal Norwegian Navy, and has some police authority.
The Coast Guard is the state's primary exerciser of authority at sea and safeguards maritime safety in areas under Norwegian jurisdiction together with other agencies. In the period up to 2024, the Coast Guard's vessels in the North Cape class will be replaced by three new vessels. The vessels will serve the Norwegian people, the Coast Guard, the coastal nation of Norway and the Norwegian Armed Forces for many decades to come.

The three new coastguard vessels in the Jan Mayen class will be named "Jan Mayen", "Bjørnøya" and "Hopen". The total cost framework for the project itself is NOK 6.8 billion.
