Illustrated talk by Rory Hodd, organised by the National Botanic Gardens.

Thanks to its position on the edge of the Atlantic, Ireland has perfect conditions for the growth of a very rich, lush mix of mosses, liverworts and ferns which, within Europe, only grow along the humid oceanic fringe. Many of these species occur elsewhere thousands of kilometres away in biogeographic regions which at first glance are very different to Ireland. This talk will give an overview of some of these special species and discuss how their remarkable distributions came to be.'

Rory Hodd is an independent botanist, bryologist and ecologist, who is dedicated to the monitoring and conservation of Ireland's rare plant species and habitats. He has a specialist interest in mosses and liverworts, and is on a mission to open as many eyes as possible to their stunning beauty and diversity.
