Thousands marched on Thursday in a nationwide protest against the "omnibus" jobs creation bill that became law earlier this week, for a third straight day.
Protesters, consisting mostly of students, gathered in front of the Jakarta's presidential palace.
Tensions were high police used tear gas to disperse demonstrators, and the latter were seen throwing projectiles.
Several fires were spotted, including a building and roadblocks, with dark smoke billowing in the sky.
"This protest is not just from students, [but] from all elements of society in Indonesia," said a student, as they were facing off a police line.
The bill passed into law on Monday is aiming at easing the business, labour and environmental laws, in order to stimulate the economy. Labour groups say this would come at the expense of workers' rights, remuneration and job security.
