Our journey from Tromso to the North Cape took place first on board the Jewel of the seas, up to Honningsvåg and then from there to the North Cape by bus.

North Cape is located in the island Magerøya which is 436 square kilometers, the 14th largest island in Norway, with four fishing villages alongside the town Honensvog. In total, the island has made for around 3,000 people, 250 dogs and 500 cats, and a goldfish that has gone into hiding.

All buildings are post-war architecture, except the church, built in 1885.

You will notice that most houses have strong, vibrant colours, and always different colour from house to house. This brings pretty colours to a long, snowy winter, and is important when returning from the pub, being able to recognise your own house.

Other than fishing boats and beautiful scenery, you will find pubs and restaurants where you can meet friendly locals.

40 years ago the population was 5,000 people, double as many as today.

The town is a natural harbour for boats, has a local newspaper, radio station, and a rich tradition with theatre and festivals. The locals have a strong sense of pride, of belonging, and identification with the land, with the ocean, and the ever-changing nature.

Despite the northern latitude, you will find the climate surprisingly mild in winter and equally cool in summer. The reason being the Gulf Stream, bringing a vein of warm water, providing harbors free of ice all year round.

You may notice there are no trees on the island, except one tree mounted for the shooting of a film.

You will find eruptive or volcanic layers and sedimentary ones, and the metamorphic ones are dominating in the western and northern parts of the island. You will find magmatite, granite, quartz at the North Cape. There is also slate, gabbro, crystals and minerals, sandstone, dolomite and limestone, and beautiful white marble at some places. Ancient fossils are found on the island, some of them 430 million years old.

Most importantly, we recommend visiting the globe, on the far side of the building, only a short record.

This is the symbol that you are standing on the northernmost of Europe, previously seen as the end of the known world. The cliff rages 307 meters, or 1,000 feet, above the Arctic Ocean, with the endless horizon beyond.

Inside of the building everything is included, you will not need to show your ticket anywhere. Downstairs is a movie theater, portraying the different seasons. The film lasts for 15 minutes, and are shown at regular intervals. Once downstairs, you will find a tunnel and the cave of lights. There are historical exhibitions as you go along, the St. John Chapel and a time museum. On the first floor you find a restaurant, a snack bar and the gift store, where you also find locally produced souvenirs.

On the return journey we stopped by a Sami family.
The Sami people are indigenous to northern Norway
They have always lived here.
Many herd reindeer, for example, and no trip to northern Norway is really complete until you have encountered Sami merchants on the roadside peddling traditional wares.
