This course has explored leadership at sea, through the lens of expeditions that established the baselines of ocean and polar science in the last days of sailing ships. Why are some expeditions successful, while others fail? And what lessons are embedded in these examples for current leaders in science, business, and navigation? In this seminar we have examined examples—successful and otherwise—of science and exploration done from sailing vessels. We have taken a case study approach to investigate the influence of leadership and strategy on the outcomes of expeditions, applying a range of leadership models and strategic analytical tools to inform our evaluation. Between historical cases we’ve broadened our discussions to include leadership in non-western and contemporary expeditions and explore how the topics of leadership and management are addressed in today's academic environment and across a variety of fields. The course has included guest lecturers in literature, science history, business, voyaging, etc., and involved a short weekend training experience aboard the Schooner Bowdoin.
