Even on Sunday! Not that I would ever doubt that in Piraeus ferries are also dispatched on Sundays.
A little personal story is behind this video. You will hear in the clip - at the beginning and at the end - an older Greek song. Since I also have many visitors from outside Europe who may not know it, I will explain it briefly: It is an old Greek song with which I have a special relationship. It is the soundtrack from a movie. And that film was called: Never on Sunday.
My grandfather on my mother's side was a sailor in his young years and came to Piraeus and Crete. He always told us about Greece with shining eyes. About Piraeus. About the ships. This place had deeply impressed him.
He was an enthusiastic soccer player and when he retired he was a groundsman on a soccer field. And when we visited him during the vacations, he took us to that soccer field every day. With an old Opel Ascona, which always smelled of gasoline inside. He loved folk music and sailor songs, much to my grandma's chagrin. And so we had to listen to folk music on every trip to the soccer field. I didn't like that either. But there was sometimes a certain song. A single song that I took to my heart. It was "Ta pedia tou Pirea" (Children of Piraeus, in German: A ship will arrive - my grandpa always listened to the German version from 1960). And then my grandpa always told about Piraeus. I didn't know what Piraeus was at that time, but I liked this song very much.
Nowadays, when I visit Piraeus and hear this song - because it is played by a carillon in the harbor - I think back to my grandfather. And of his enthusiasm for this song. And Piraeus.
My grandfather never came back to Piraeus, by the way.
