Did you already know that the Panama Canal has a major flaw that’s hard to ignore?
Every single ship that passes through it uses around 200 million litres of fresh water. Yes, you read that right—200 million. To put that into perspective, picture one of those big tanker trucks you see on the road. Now imagine 182 of them lined up. That line would stretch almost a third of the way to the horizon. That’s how much water it takes for just one cargo ship to get through. And every day, about 40 ships make the journey. That’s an absolutely mind-boggling amount of water.
But why does it need so much? You’d think building a canal would be simple—just dig a trench from one ocean to the other, let the seawater fill it up, and ships can sail right through. So why is extra water needed at all?
