Ahead of an Arria formula meeting of the Security Council, Haakon, the Crown Prince of Norway today (6 Dec) told reporters that the unanimous adoption of resolution 2601 by the Security Council earlier this year, “is an important landmark,” but “now we must ensure that the resolution is fully implemented.”

Haakon said, “for the first time the Security Council has adopted a separate resolution dedicated to the protection of education in conflict zones; one which highlights the invaluable role of access to education in achieving peace and security; calls upon UN members to protect schools and education facilities from attacks; and urges all parties to fulfil their obligation to facilitate the continuation of education during conflict.”

He said, “we need to build on this momentum and do more” and urge stakeholders” to join in the effort to ensure the full implementation of this resolution in close cooperation with member states, UN agencies, and civil society partners, so that together we can strengthen our resolve to promote education. In times of conflict, in time of stability, and as a basis for building peace.”

Adopted by the Security Council at its 8889th meeting, on 29 October 2021, resolution 2601 urges Member States to develop effective measures to prevent and address attacks and threats of attacks against schools and education facilities, and, as appropriate, develop domestic legal frameworks to ensure respect for their relevant international legal obligations as applicable to them.
