Wednesday Yachting Luncheon
Hosted by Ron Young
Speaker: Josh Barlas, 2nd Mate Unlimited, 1600 Ton Master, Master of Tow, SeaCor Oceanic Research Vessel
Each year, two heavy lift ships operated by SeaCor, the Ocean Giant and the Ocean Gladiator, sail from Hueneme, CA to McMurdo Station in Antarctica to support the National Science Foundation’s research, resupply operations, and return with ice core samples. Departing from Philadelphia, deckhand Josh sailed the Ocean Giant for 112 days through the Panama Canal, to Port of Hueneme, CA, across the Pacific, the International Date Line and the Equator to Lyttelton, New Zealand and finally south to the frozen continent. Such voyages are fascinating from navigational, logistical and political perspectives. Josh will interweave these various threads with his personal anecdotes as a deckhand working aboard the Ocean Giant.
