In the wake of COP 28 a key to future success in realising global climate objectives will be how China and India progress in curbing GHG emissions, especially from coal, and moving to the use of renewables.

There is apparently rapid progress in China - albeit as the largest GHG emitter by far with 29% of the world total - in decarbonising the motor vehicle sector and power generation. The seminar will interrogate the success of this development, India is not as significant - with 7.4% of the total emissions: third, ahead of the EU and behind only the 11.2% of the USA. But with a population the same size of China’s and with rapid economic growth it will soon emerge as the second largest emitter. It shares with China also large indigenous supplies of coal, which are seen as a source of energy security, and a reliance on large-scale imports of oil and gas. The seminar will look at emerging trends and at the political commitment in both countries to net zero.

He was UK Secretary of State for Business Innovation and Skills and President of the Board of Trade (2010-2015). He was Leader of the Liberal Democrats from 2017-19. He served for 20 years as MP for Twickenham and retired in 2019.
