BMW Announce - Drive Shaft Corrosion Inspection and Test - Sevice Action 0033130000 BMW R1250GS Service Action or Technical Enhancement 0033130000 - Service Aktionen 0033130000.
This Technical Enhancement procedure was released by BMW here in Germany on June 15th 2022 and involves a modification to the rear drive shaft housing on the left-hand side of the GS.
The modification involves drilling a small 6 or 8mm hole in the lower part of the drive shaft outer housing and installing a pressure / moisture relief valve.
I do have a copy of the original full technical documentation that has been released, but it is of course in German. But it clearly outlines the modification that needs to be done.
This is MY UNDERSTANDING…. And not a direct translation.
A: less than 2,000km: 1: Carry out modification. NO INSPECTION
B: More than 60,000km: 1: Carry out modification. 2: Replace drive shaft unit.
C: Between 2 and 60K km: 1: Carry out modification. 2 Perform drive shaft test.
Option 1: Drive shaft fails test – Replace drive shaft
Option 2: Drive shaft test passed & no water or only a few drops drip out during modification – no extra work is done.
Option 3: Drive shaft test passed, but more than a few drops of water come out – drive shaft splines are then inspected for wear and inspected to see if it is seized .
If it is seized, an attempt will be made to free it off. If this can not be done the drive shaft is then replaced.
If the wear on the splines is excessive, the drive shaft will be replaced.
So please understand that this is my current understanding of the instruction given in this document.
The document could be updated at any time by BMW. I have not seen the English version yet.
If you have more questions, please contact your local BMW dealer
Best wishes
