This 2-minute video is a montage of real-time videos of the Northern Lights shot along the coast of Norway on the Hurtigruten ferry ship the m/s Nordkapp, over three nights, November 8-10, 2024. We had three very clear nights with active auroras from an ongoing solar storm that on November 9 produced colourful auroras in the twilight sky early in the evening. Some sequences show the “coronal outburst” overhead at the zenith.

The movie ends with videos of the ship entering the narrow Trollfjord in the Lofoten Islands, at midnight by searchlight. Auroras pointed the way in. But we did not see any trolls.

I was an aurora instructor with a tour group from the travel company Road Scholar, who specializes in educational travel.

Music is “Aiming at Polaris” by Francis Wells, licensed through Epidemic Sound.

Technical:
All shot in 4K with the Nikon Z6III at ISOs 6400 to 25,600, with the Nikkor 20mm lens at f/1.8. Sequences processed with Adobe Camera Raw as a filter in Photoshop.
