The Nord Stream pipelines being sabotaged have set a dangerous precedent for industrial, infrastructure and economic security across the trans-Atlantic and wider European region. Basically, wherever NATO is now present, those regions could now see their infrastructure being targeted. The Nord Stream pipelines are very dear to Russia. They are a symbol of Russian power over Europe, and them getting bombed severely damaged Moscow’s reputation. The Nord Stream sabotage also dealt a severe blow to Putin’s energy leverage over Europe. But that sabotage did something else too. It opened the floodgates for all critical infrastructure across Europe, the Pacific and the wider Atlantic region to be sabotaged. That’s because Russia now has cause to act in that direction. Moscow can easily argue that since its pipelines were attacked, the infrastructure of countries hostile to Russia is fair game too.
