Climate change and environmental degradation are growing risks to global security. The ability of the U.S. and EU to keep the 1.5 °C goal within reach and deliver on the clean energy transition comes with new material and technological dependencies that have major foreign policy and security implications. The transatlantic partners must lead by example in navigating this new geopolitical landscape. Identifying a democratic and just way forward that supports strategic partners in adapting and sustainably transforming their economies will be critical.

To analyze and discuss these issues, the German Marshall Fund of the United States (GMF) will bring together Josep Borrell, High Representative of the European Union for Foreign Affairs and Security Policy; John Kerry, US Special Presidential Envoy for Climate; Jens Stoltenberg, NATO Secretary General; and Frans Timmermans, Executive Vice-President of the European Commission.

Thank you to our partners the European Commission, the North Atlantic Treaty Organization and the US Department of State.
