The Future of European Security and Transatlantic Cooperation

With global attention focused on Russia’s invasion of Ukraine, Europe has re-emerged as a hotspot for global peace and security. As one of Europe’s leading voices on defense, security assistance and the future of multilateral cooperation, former President of Estonia H.E. Kersti Kaljulaid has well understood the forces at play since Russia’s invasion of Ukraine, as well as their impact on the transatlantic community.

President Kaljulaid holds the distinction of being the first woman elected president of her country as well as the youngest president at the time of her election. During her five-year term, she was an avid proponent of improving cybersecurity and cyber defense, of strengthening multilateral mechanisms — including the U.N., European Union and NATO — and of better understanding the implications of international law on modern conflict.

On May 10, please join USIP for an exclusive conversation with H.E. Kersti Kaljulaid on the current state of European security and the future of multilateral cooperation since Russia’s invasion of Ukraine. Following a keynote address by President Kaljulaid, former National Security Advisor and USIP Board Chair Stephen J. Hadley will join President Kaljulaid for a fireside chat, which will also address the role of women leaders in Europe in mobilizing a collective international response to the war in Ukraine.

The United States Institute of Peace is a national, nonpartisan, independent institute, founded by Congress and dedicated to the proposition that a world without violent conflict is possible, practical and essential for U.S. and global security. In conflict zones abroad, the Institute works with local partners to prevent, mitigate, and resolve violent conflict. To reduce future crises and the need for costly interventions, USIP works with governments and civil societies to build local capacities to manage conflict peacefully. The Institute pursues its mission by linking research, policy, training, analysis and direct action to support those who are working to build a more peaceful, inclusive world.
