Jim Baird: 11 Days Solo Wilderness Camping in the Arctic Watershed continues in episode 3 - 'Muddy Slog and Camping Gear'. Portaging the canoe deeper into the backcountry alone, I'm way off-grid on a remote, far-flung wild camping trip in Northern Ontario. After trekking back on the bush trail to make camp because the trapper's cabin was locked, I light a fire, set up my tent and cook camping food over the fire with my mess kit. Breaking camp in the morning I use my camping stove and camping coffee press before I begin carrying my drybag and food barrel. The adventure ramps up when the black flies come out and I have to begin a long muddy slog up a creek where there used to be a huge beaver pond. Using some bug spray I put my head down and start hauling but I soon realize it is going to take me a very long time to get up the shallow creek.
I'm prepared with proper outfitting, including trail tape and ready to canoe whitewater and portage. This film series is about bushcraft survival in the woods where I’m truly alone in the wild, exploring and fishing Northern Ontario by canoe. Beginning on a remote river I reach via a forest access road, I solo wilderness travel to reach the advanced level whitewater of the North French River. I then paddle on the Moose River, completing the trip some 330 kilometres later in the community of Moosonee where I catch the Ontario Northland Polar Bear Express train. On this adventure, I solo rapids, catch Walleye and Northern Pike, trek, paddle and camp. What’s better than catching wild fish for a catch and cook over the fire in the wilderness? I also find a remote, trapper’s cabin, run multiple whitewater rapids, undertake long, bushwhack portages and see a lot of wildlife including Moose sightings.
